The Legend of Lilly Mangan
Director of Operations
Long before she was scheduling stylists and ordering foils, Lilly Mangan was born under a big top in a rainy field outside Sarasota, in the back of a tiger wagon. Her first lullaby was a calliope. Her first words were “Ladies and gentlemen.” She was raised by a crew of carnies who taught her three things: how to read a crowd, how to run a tight schedule, and that no one has ever been sad about funnel cake.
Her family, The Magnificent Mangans, were the most celebrated trapeze artists in the circus world. The posters said “Death-Defying!” The critics said “Surprisingly Well-Organized!” By age four, Lilly could catch a triple somersault AND French braid mid-flight. Her grandfather called it “unnecessary but flawless.”
Then came the night everything changed. A mysterious sheik in Abu Dhabi, dazzled by the Mangans, had the entire troupe kidnapped (politely, with snacks) to perform at his palace. For eleven months they swung above a golden courtyard while Lilly secretly ran the palace’s entire beauty operation. She was the only person in the Emirates who could tame a camel’s mane in humidity, and the first to notice the sheik’s favorite camel had better skin than the sheik. She quietly fixed that too.
Eventually the sheik released the Mangans with a jeweled turban and a heartfelt apology. But on the voyage home, a rogue wave, a confused seagull, and one poorly labeled map sent their ship crashing onto an undiscovered island.
Marooned for a full year, Lilly did not panic. She organized. She color-coded the coconuts and drew up a shift schedule for the crabs. When she met the island’s native women, she shared the secrets of a great blowout and invented a conditioner from papaya, sea salt, and sheer determination. Her signature product, Castaway Shine™, became the island’s most valuable currency.
But the real breakthrough came when she discovered the island’s sea-kelp serum. Using a sterilized fishbone, a steady hand, and what she later called “a really strong commitment to the bit,” she gave the entire village a refresh. The island’s elders went from “weathered by sun and sorrow” to “suspiciously dewy.” Nobody could explain it. Every mirror on the island was reportedly “emotionally overwhelmed.”
The women were so moved that they held a sunrise ceremony and gave her a name of honor: Lilu’ana Frizzaloo-Mei, which roughly translates to “Radiant Tamer of the Wild Hair Spirits, Beloved of the Coconut Oil, Smoother of the Forehead Lines.” Elders confirm it can also mean “the one who finally fixed Deborah’s bangs.” She was crowned Queen of Frizz Control, and to this day the island’s children play a game called “Lilu’ana says,” in which everyone must stand up straight and hydrate.
When a passing fishing boat finally rescued the Magnificent Mangans, the islanders wept, and the island’s volcano erupted in what scientists agree was “an emotional response.”
Back in the States, Lilly knew she needed to make it official. She traded her trapeze for textbooks and is now studying to become an aesthetics nurse, where her skills have only gotten sharper. Her steady hands, honed over a thousand catches at forty feet, make her the calmest person in any room with a syringe. Her instructors say she has “the precision of a surgeon, the poise of an acrobat, and an unsettling familiarity with fishbone technique.” She still practices on oranges, as tradition demands, though she maintains the coconuts were better.
Her years in Los Angeles included styling a celebrity so famous she’s legally unable to say who. The celebrity has since asked for her by name, which Lilly will neither confirm nor deny.
But the calling of the north was too strong. Today, she has brought her legendary talents, her trapeze-honed balance, her shipwreck-tested crisis management, and her uncanny ability to calm any hair, skin, or scheduling emergency to Hair Success Salon Spa in Fargo, where she serves as Director of Operations.
Fun fact: the salon’s schedule has never once run late. Experts attribute this to “carnival timing” and “a fear of the sheik.”
